I supported CRONA, the labor union representing nurses at Stanford Children’s and Lucile Packard Hospitals during a pivotal recent contract negotiation. After creating a plan designed to apply ongoing pressure to the hospitals, I led my team to create an ongoing stream of email, social media, newsletter, and event-based content to increase member engagement and public awareness. To win, the union needed to maintain a strong message about what would be needed to reduce nurse burnout and turnover to keep patients and workers safe. We secured coverage in the San Francisco Chronicle, the Mercury News, on KQED, and more, elevating nurses’ voices on key issues and urging the hospitals to do right by their frontline workers. Ultimately, we were able to unify members to vote in favor of a strike, utilizing the combination of a strike vote and well-timed public visibility to compel the hospitals to agree to the contract their nurses deserved. Thanks to a clear message and unified membership, CRONA won a contract that included higher wages, better benefits, more workplace safety protections, and fairer working conditions for their hardworking nurses.
